We work with architects to identify, quantify and cost all sustainability options, enabling clients to see just how environmentally clean their building can be. As part of this approach, we make extensive use of dynamic software modelling, making it possible, for example, to accurately measure the financial and environmental cost of, say, altering the exterior colour of a building, its orientation or level of glazing. Similarly, we can test the impact of using different energy sources, climate control and ventilation systems – in fact, the whole range of engineering and architectural options.
The IES package is an impressive interactive tool which allows for accurately projecting the energy demands and CO2 emissions in buildings using detailed analysis of heating, cooling and electrical loads sampled on an hourly basis over the course of the year. It forms the ideal platform for creating the “base” building from which any number of calculation passes can be made in order to accurately predict energy savings which can be achieved by introducing innovative solutions such as passive building design, energy efficient systems and renewable energy technologies. This is an essential first step, working with the rest of the design team in order to develop a robust and effective concept design and life cycle cost plan.
Computational Fluid Dynamics or CFD is becoming an increasingly popular and important design tool. It is a technique used by Formula 1 teams and the aerospace industry alike and enables a design to be fully tested and proven in a virtual environment, before any work starts on site. The software models complex air flows, temperatures and pressures such that the interaction between items of plant, equipment and their environment can be accurately predicted. The use of CFD software enables potential hot spots, areas of recirculation and overheating to all be highlighted and designed out from the beginning, effectively removing a significant element of risk.
RED uses the Future Facilities 6Sigma suite of software. This industry leading software package is designed specifically to capture the resolution and level of detail required to analyse mission critical facilities such as data centres.
We use full three dimensional BIM enabled design, modelling and visualisation software comprising a suite of Revit MEP, AutoCAD MEP, 3D Studio Max and SketchUp Pro. RED has a high level of experience in developing project designs in full coordinated 3D. We construct intelligent, BIM enabled, 3D models allowing services to be designed directly to coordinate within the architectural and structural models.
Revit BIM modelling provides a coordinated, accurate design process and significantly reduces the need to hold replicated data sets. Our BIM 3D design models contain system intelligence and integration for fully synchronised data sets, resulting in co–ordinated drawing and technical information, resulting in significant benefits to operating a BIM design philosophy and modelling process.
RED’s hands-on experience on a wide variety of sites in different sectors enables us to provide the inputs to accurately provide modelling data giving dependable results which are then used in the submission of feasibility studies either to be used for large Capex energy reduction projects as well as for addressing the requirements of local authorities planning conditions for renewable energy generation.
CO2 emissions targets are being driven relentlessly to lower and lower levels by the increasingly demanding Building Regulations and Planning Requirements. Our use of accurate and detailed modelling software enables us to maximise on the CO2 savings demonstrated by our building services designs together with helping us achieve the necessary BREEAM standards. With the European target of zero Carbon emissions for buildings by 2019, our software modelling tools are becoming increasingly valuable to achieve these ambitious targets by the most practical and cost effective methods.
