Digital Engineering & Technology

RED’s design team don’t just use leading BIM, CFD and simulation software – we’re always improving the digital tools we use.  Our global team of engineers, designers and BIM co-ordinators think “outside the box” to deliver project value and reduce project environmental footprint.  RED's team of Industry specialists includes Revit BIM designers & co-ordinators, CFD & energy modelling practitioners to deliver in-house modelling.  We work with software houses to help improve the value of their products to MEP design team, our collaborators and the client by tailoring their product to our project to give RED the edge.

Digital Engineering & BIM

RED's integrated team of engineers, designers and BIM co-ordinators bring true digitalisation of the design process together for project delivery.  Innovative use of automation for repetitive tasks through customised coded applications and linked processes that help identify the effects of design decisions immediately.  Fast point cloud digitalisation of existing environments to high levels of dimensionally accuracy and early “virtual customer experience” of the developing design concepts aid REDs global collaboration internally and externally with our design team partners. RED has direct involvement in helping to shape the future of the industry through CIBSE and the Society of Digital Engineering.

CFD Modelling

Complex airflow, temperature and pressure distribution is modelled using the leading CFD software in the data centre industry, 6SigmaDCX, in line with industry best practice. This allows the project team to gather unique insight into the interaction between items of plant, equipment and their environment and to communicate these insights effectively. CFD modelling enables a design to be fully tested and proven in a virtual environment before being put into production. This allows potential hot spots, areas of recirculation and overheating to be highlighted and designed out from the beginning, effectively removing a significant element of risk. Our experience encompasses a wide variety of projects ranging from data centre whitespace analysis to external plant study and electrical room, data hall survey and expansion planning.

Electrical Building Physics

RED completes electrical modelling of low carbon generation schemes.  Export to the grid is enabled by satisfying technical requirements of the utility connection agreement requirements.  Electrical modelling is also undertaken on HV and LV distribution systems to assess performance and perform diagnostics. Typically such analysis would include load flow study, dynamic and transient stability (to satisfy ENA ER P28), short circuit analysis, protection coordination studies, earthing studies and harmonic studies.

Energy & Water Efficiency

We have developed a bespoke methodology and analysis tool to enable us to accurately assess electrical and cooling infrastructure performance. This expertise is used to develop bottom-up models to predict energy and water consumption during design to identify equipment selection meeting the project requirement, forecast for future phasing and load growth. It is also enables us to provide site specific benchmarks, measurement and validation plans for plant upgrade and generally assists with reducing energy and water consumption. This expertise is coupled with costs and economic analysis to enable life-cycle costing that includes not only energy and water costs, but also maintenance and expected equipment life-span.  View assuRED Web App


A highly comprehensive dynamic simulation tool used for CIBSE / ASHRAE heating and cooling loads calculations, overheating analysis for natural ventilated spaces, shadow analysis, daylight simulation, as well as detailed energy performance design and demonstrating Part L, BREEAM and LEED (ASHRAE 90.1 App G) compliance. The software uses real weather data and occupancy and internal heat gain profiles to accurately predict thermal loads and energy and daylight performance.

Point Cloud

Point Cloud surveys are used to establish the exact dimensions of existing architecture, structure and services. This helps form the basis of our Revit Model.  RED uses Point Cloud Surveys to recreate Revit models of existing facilities.
