Emily Stagg: Steering Women in RED and Shaping Her Own Engineering Career

From discovering the unexpected sides of engineering to leading our Women in RED network, Emily’s journey shows what happens when you follow your own ambitions.

What did you think engineering would be like before you started?

Before I started engineering, I knew it was going to be a very maledominated industry, and that never really put me off.

I went into it expecting that I would probably be one of the few women in the room, but that inspired me to do it more, it felt like not following the status quo. I also imagined it being very hands-on and practical all the time. I imagined being onsite, building things, testing equipment and working directly with physical systems every day.

Has anything about working in engineering surprised you?

It surprised me that so much design and problem-solving is done on a computer. I hadn’t realised how much of engineering involves digital modelling and detailed design work before anything is physically built. I also how many different roles are involved in making an engineering company so powerful!

Can you share a moment in your career that you’re proud of?

Leading our global Women in RED network has been a huge accomplishment, I’m so excited to be affiliated with so many amazing women in this company.

Another moment that comes to mind, is holding the fort independently on a project whilst the senior members of my team were away. Being given responsibility to drive the team, ensure tasks were completed on time and liaise with the client, felt great that they trusted me to do what needed to be done to a high standard.

What would you say to a younger version of yourself?

You can do anything! To have dreams and goals is so important. I’d also tell myself to keep an open mind - sometimes the best path for you will unfold the more you learn and experience things in life.
