Our 2025 Summer Interns at RED

At RED Engineering Design, we are committed to developing the next generation of engineers. This year, we launched our first summer internship programme, welcoming students into our offices to gain practical insight into the world of engineering consultancy - including exposure to high-profile projects such as Data Centres, which are at the forefront of our MEP and CSA work.

For many, it was also their first introduction to Building Services - an exciting and fast-evolving field that is not always covered during university studies.

Interns joined teams in both London and Bicester, contributing to live projects, developing new technical skills, and experiencing the collaborative culture that makes RED unique. We’re proud to share that this year’s internship programme was a remarkable success - and that several of our 2025 Summer Interns have been invited to return to RED in 2026 through our Graduate Programme. To capture their reflections, Niamh Faughnan, Skills and Talent Development Manager, spoke with our interns about their experiences, learning, and advice for other students considering a career in engineering.

RED’s 2025 Summer Internship Highlights

Maya Miers - London Office

Maya joined the CFD team in London, where she applied her university learning to real-world projects for the first time. She had the chance to use new tools such as Cadence Reality, Navis, and Bluebeam, and worked closely with colleagues on CFD modelling tasks.

Reflecting on the ‘eye-opening’ experience, Maya said:

My time at RED has been incredibly rewarding. It’s been a fantastic opportunity to apply what I’ve learned at university to real-world projects, and I’ve gained so much practical experience along the way.
Maya Miers, Intern

Beyond technical learning, Maya highlighted how valuable it was to step away from theory and see engineering in practice. She also appreciated the balance of professional guidance and community spirit within her team:

Some of my best chats have been by the coffee machine! The CFD team was very sociable, and we often went out for lunch together, which was a wonderful way to discover unfamiliar places around London and get to know everyone better.

When asked what she would say to other students, Maya encouraged them to explore Building Services as an exciting and future-focused field:

Building Services is a fascinating and evolving field, especially with the growing demand for Data Centres and the rise of AI. It combines engineering, sustainability, and innovation in a way that’s both impactful and future-focused - and it’s well worth exploring.

Ameera Azad – London Office

Ameera also spent her internship working on live projects in the London office, where she was introduced to new processes and tools such as Amtech and Dialux. Coming from a biomedical engineering background, the experience showed her how transferable her skills were while helping her build confidence in applying them to a new discipline.

She described her summer at RED as a chance to grow both technically and professionally:

My time at RED has been fantastic. I’ve had the opportunity to contribute to real-world projects, strengthen my technical skills, and learn from a team that’s not only highly knowledgeable but also genuinely supportive.
 Ameera Azad, Intern

Ameera highlighted how the environment at RED made her feel comfortable asking questions, taking on challenges, and stretching herself beyond her comfort zone. The mix of encouragement and guidance from colleagues helped her progress quickly.

Looking ahead, she emphasised the exciting opportunities that exist in Building Services, particularly in response to global trends:

With the rapid rise of Data Centres and smart technologies, the need for innovative electrical solutions is growing fast. The demand for work in this sector is high, and the scope for professional development is vast, making it an exciting and future-focused career path.
 Ameera Azad, Intern

Yaya Mabiala – Bicester Office

Yaya joined the Bicester office, where his placement gave him first-hand exposure to the consultancy side of engineering. He was introduced to the technical aspects of MEP design and quickly realised that being an engineer is about more than technical ability - it’s also about communication and collaboration across disciplines.

Reflecting on his summer, Yaya explained:

My time at RED has been a huge learning experience, especially as there were many aspects of engineering that I was not aware of – not just being strong technically but being an effective communicator within a multidisciplinary team.
 Yaya Mabiala, Intern

What stood out to him most was RED’s strong focus on professional development. Through training sessions, mentorship, and continuous learning opportunities, he felt supported to grow both technically and personally - gaining a better understanding of what it takes to build a successful career within an engineering design consultancy.

When asked what advice he would give to other students, Yaya encouraged them to take a closer look at Building Services:

My advice to other students would be not to overlook Building Services. Once you understand how much planning goes into making buildings, it gives you a new perspective.

LOOKING AHEAD

This year’s summer internship programme has been a fantastic success, with Maya, Ameera, and Yaya bringing energy, curiosity, and fresh perspectives to our teams in London and Bicester. Over the past 10 weeks, they’ve contributed meaningfully to live projects, gained hands-on experience, and developed skills that will serve them well in their future careers.

Reflecting on the programme, Niamh Faughnan, Skills and Talent Development Manager, said:

It is rewarding to hear we’ve had a real impact on a future engineer’s career. We’ve loved hearing positive feedback about the support from mentors and the wider RED team. Our interns have grown, contributed meaningfully, and gained hands-on experience – especially in specialised areas like Data Centres.
Niamh Faughnan, Skills and Talent Development Manager

We’re excited to welcome some of our interns back in 2026 through our Graduate Programme and look forward to continuing to support and inspire the next generation of engineers. You can learn more about our Early Careers programmes on the Careers page.
