RED Engineering Design is proud to congratulate Gateshead College and the PlanBEE initiative on receiving royal recognition through the Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering’s “Elevate” Award.
This honour highlights the exceptional impact of PlanBEE in developing the next generation of engineering and built-environment talent - a mission that aligns closely with RED’s own values and long-term commitment to the scheme.
RED joined PlanBEE in 2022, recognising the programme’s unique ability to provide young people with a structured, practical and industry-led pathway into engineering design. Since then, we have proudly supported two full rotation cycles, providing 10 placements to date across our UK business, with each cycle spanning two years and involving six placements per cycle.
Our involvement has already led to long-term success stories. Following the first sponsorship round, we welcomed Tom Coulthard into a permanent electrical engineering role at RED, reflecting both the calibre of PlanBEE participants and the value they bring to our Data Centre engineering teams.
"At RED, we are proud to play an active role in developing the next generation of engineering talent through PlanBEE. As a global consultancy specialising in Data Centres, we see it as our responsibility to nurture emerging professionals, providing them with real-world experience and mentorship. Our apprentices have already made meaningful contributions to key projects, and it is incredibly rewarding to watch their skills, confidence, and careers grow alongside our business." David Taylor, UK Managing Director
Throughout each placement, PlanBEE apprentices at RED gain hands-on experience across design engineering, BIM, digital workflows, project coordination and quality delivery. Working alongside our multidisciplinary teams, apprentices are exposed to real-world Data Centre design challenges and supported by mentors from across the business.
"My time at RED through the PlanBEE programme has been an incredible learning experience. I’ve gained hands-on exposure to real Data Centre projects, worked alongside talented engineers, and developed skills I never imagined I could in just a placement. It’s given me the confidence and practical experience to pursue a career in engineering, and I’m excited to continue growing with RED." Tom Coulthard, Apprentice, RED Engineering Design
As RED continues to expand - including our growing footprint across Europe, the Middle East and APAC - developing engineering talent remains central to our global strategy. Our partnership with Gateshead College supports not only the regional skills pipeline but the broader future of the Data Centre industry.
We congratulate Gateshead College, Ryder Architecture, and all PlanBEE partners on this well-deserved recognition. RED is honoured to be part of a programme that is shaping the next generation of engineering professionals.
