RED Engineering Design is delighted to announce that One Southwark Bridge Road (LC03) project has been certified BREEAM Outstanding, recognising the exemplary approach to sustainability, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
What is BREEAM?
Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) is the world-leading sustainability assessment method for buildings and infrastructure. It measures environmental, social, and economic sustainability performance, encouraging design and construction that supports a low-carbon, resilient future.
How did RED achieve this?
With the commitment of Structure Tone and WPP, the project’s environmental success was driven by RED’s dedicated sustainability certification team. Led by Alexandra Vella, Technical Director and Head of Certification, and Amelia Cunnane, Senior Sustainability Engineer, the team combined deep expertise with a collaborative approach to exceed industry standards and help the team achieve BREEAM Outstanding certification.
For the One Southwark Bridge Road (LC03) project, RED’s approach helped deliver:
- Responsibly sourced materials with Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
- Life cycle assessment (LCA) third-party verification resulting in high materials credits facilitated by significant façade re-use and reducing the building’s carbon footprint.
- Energy efficient systems.
- 60kWp rooftop solar PVs and air-source heat pumps (ASHP), reducing operational emissions.
- Nearly 400m² of green roofing, resulting in over a 200% increase in site ecology.
- Exemplary site management practices, with Structure Tone achieving maximum points in the Considerate Contractors scheme.
- Excellent public transport links and extensive active travel facilities including secure cycle parking.
