Canopy by Hilton, City of London

RED was appointed to design and monitor the MEP services for this new 340 key 4-star boutique hotel.  This forms part of the Minories mixed use redevelopment in the City of London, which also includes a new 300,000ft² office block and 80,000ft² residential building.  The hotel element of the project involves recladding and extending a vacant office building.  Challenges included adapting normal hotel vertical distribution to suit a structural frame that was not suited to the usual guest room risers.  An additional challenge was isolating the sleeping areas from the noise and vibration from the underground trains running beneath part of the existing building.

RED delivered sustainable design solutions for this project. A central energy centre serving the whole development provides heat for domestic hot water generation.  Heat recovery ventilation and comfort cooling systems, together with LED lighting minimise energy costs and carbon emissions.  A combined grey water and rainwater attenuation/harvesting system minimises water consumption.

Key Facts

  • Unitised curtain walling construction with demountable extruded fins façade design limits solar gains of the 20,000 m² office building to aim to maximise CO₂ emission reduction
  • RED mandated as Code for Sustainable Home assessor for the residential element of the 87 dwellings project involving daylighting calculations to optimize windows sizes and to achieve the best energy performance whilst enhancing natural lighting in the living zone
